Our mission is to embrace and celebrate the diverse communities of girls who play the game.
Like a Girl works with girls who aren’t being seen by the mainstream soccer system. Largely immigrant, refugee, and low-income girls who love to play and can play. Our girls are effectively invisible. We exist to change that.
The pitch brought us together. It united 3 coaches and a great group of girls. We come from very different backgrounds, but what brought us together was a ball, a pitch, and a passion for the game.
Our "Way-to-Play Model" means that any girl who wants to play has a way to play. We celebrate all ways of playing, whether between trash cans or on a new turf field. And, it means that whenever a girl tries, we encourage her with a supportive cheer: “Way to play!!”.
The Invisible Pitch
Amazing young women and the places they play are often unseen by the mainstream soccer system. Girls who play on these invisible pitches tend to be girls of color, immigrants, refugees, low-income, and or city-based. We believe that these pitches and the girls who play on them deserve to be seen by others and themselves as ‘real’ soccer players.
What started as a love for coaching turned out to be much, much more. After coaching an inner city girls soccer team in St. Paul we decided to take our mission further.
Board of Directors
Our Board of Directors is a great combination of business executives, former soccer players, youth development professionals and high school players to make up a diverse group of talented individuals.
